Temecula Scaling and Root Planing

Treat gum disease to protect your smile

What is scaling and root planing?

Scaling and root planing, also known as deep cleaning, is a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. It involves removing plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line (scaling) and smoothing the tooth roots (root planing) to promote healing and prevent bacteria from reattaching. At Temecula Valley Dentistry, we offer gentle, effective deep cleanings to help restore and protect your gum health.

We recommend Temecula scaling and root planing for patients with early to moderate periodontal disease (gum disease), as it is often the first step in stopping the progression of infection.

Signs you may need a deep cleaning

Bleeding Gums

If your gums bleed when brushing or flossing, it may be a sign of gum inflammation or infection.

Gum Recession

Receding gums that make your teeth appear longer could indicate underlying periodontal issues.

Bad Breath

Persistent bad breath (halitosis) is often caused by bacteria buildup below the gum line.

Loose Teeth or Shifting

As gum disease progresses, it can affect the bone and tissues that support your teeth.

Benefits of deep cleaning

  • Halt gum disease progression: Our Temecula scaling and root planing treatment helps stop the infection and allows your gums to begin healing.
  • Preserve your natural teeth: By treating gum disease early, we can reduce your risk of tooth loss.
  • Improve overall health: Healthy gums support better overall health and may reduce your risk of systemic conditions linked to gum disease, like heart disease and diabetes.
  • Fresher breath and cleaner mouth: Removing bacteria and buildup improves oral hygiene and reduces bad breath.

Our scaling and root planing process

  • Comprehensive evaluation ⏤ We start with a full periodontal exam and digital imaging to assess gum health and diagnose any signs of disease.
  • Gentle scaling ⏤ We carefully remove plaque and tartar from below the gum line, where your toothbrush and floss can’t reach.
  • Root planing ⏤ The root surfaces are smoothed to discourage bacteria buildup and help the gums reattach to the teeth.
  • Follow-up and maintenance ⏤ You may need more frequent cleanings afterward to maintain gum health and prevent reinfection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is scaling and root planing painful?

We use local anesthesia to keep you comfortable during treatment. Some mild tenderness afterward is normal and manageable.

How long does the procedure take?

Depending on the severity and how many areas are affected, scaling and root planing may be completed in one or two visits.

Will I need more treatment afterward?

Some patients require ongoing periodontal maintenance every 3-4 months to keep gum disease under control.

Is deep cleaning the same as regular dental cleaning?

No. Regular cleanings are preventive, while our Temecula scaling and root planing treatment treats active gum disease by removing bacteria and tartar below the gum line.

Can gum disease be reversed?

Gingivitis, the earliest stage, is reversible. More advanced gum disease can be managed but not fully cured without ongoing care.
